I had a work dinner with a client at a relatively new San Francisco restaurant, Ame, which is located in the St. Regis hotel tonight. It's located on Mission & 3rd streets, across from the Yerba Buena center in the SOMA area of SF. Though we had to touch upon a couple sensitive subjects the company and conversation were great.
What was a bit off was the wine list and the quality of the food. The wine list was limited but we did get a recommendation of a nice Oregon Pinot Noir, Austere which is a Sonoma winemaker who sourced its Pinot Noir grapes from Oregon. It was a wonderful Strawberry based spicy rendition of a light to medium bodied bottle. No complaints there...
But for all the hype, I was slightly disappointed with the food - though the menu looked great. I had a a tempura 'poke' - which was very good. Then the Dungeness crab 'Louie', an overly creamy dressing tempered what was an outstanding mix of ingredients. So far so good though... then for the main course I ordered a maine lobster, scallops, leeks and Israeli couscous that disappointed.
I would give Ame another chance but its not on the same level of established San Francisco restaurants like Town Hall, Boulevard, Gary Danko, Delfina among dozens of others.
