Recently I spent a night at the Stuhlmuller Vineyards estate in the Alexander Valley in northern Sonoma County. The 450 acre sprawling piece of land includes nearly a mile of Russian River front and rolls all the way to the top of the hill.
We stayed on the grounds for a night as guests of Fritz Stuhlmuller, who was a tremendous host. Fritz is a great guy, down to earth and truly in his element with people talking about wine and enjoying the beautiful location. Fritz gave us a tour of the property on his family's mode of transportation on the ranch, all-terrain vehicles or ATV's. On the four wheeler's we saw the entire grounds, from the various vineyards (they have approximately 180 acres planted - they produce approx. 10k cases under their own label and sell the remaining grapes to fellow Napa & Sonoma vintners), the river to the top of their land overlooking the entire Russian River valley and then back to the tasting room just off the property.
The wine was outstanding, particularly the Reserve Chardonnay which displays good character without being too 'classic chard'. Without knowing that it had been praised by the mainstream wine press, its one of those clear cut strong vintages. The Cabernet is nicely balanced with good depth. It didn't blow me away but it quietly delivered and is recommended.
Next time you're in the Alexander Valley area of Sonoma, give the Stuhlmuller's a call to visit the tasting room. Its by appointment only so call ahead, you won't be disappointed.
Sounds like a fun time. Do you know who they sell their grapes to?
