In early November we took a weekend trip up to Healdsburg, it was a belated anniversary celebration and an opportunity to drink/taste/drink some great wine. My wife heard about this great small, single vineyard Pinot Noir winery called Adrian Fog Winery. They don't have a tasting room but you can call ahead for an appointment with the winemaker, Stewart Dorman (co-owner as well), who will meet you at their wine making facility just west of Santa Rosa in web county, Sebastopol area.
Adrian Fog is a greek reference, and my first impression of the wine was one of uniqueness. It was very earthy, more reminescent of a Burgundian style but with distinctive new world characteristics and rich fruit. Nothing is filtered, they allow for a natural fermentation process.
We tasted the following wines:
2005 Pinot Noir Numbers (14.5% / 600 cases / $75 bottle) - Sonoma coast grapes - leathered berry, nicely balanced acidic with a pleasant finish.
2005 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard (14.5% / 400 cases / $75 bottle) - Savoy is in the Anderson Valley (Mendocino county). This vintage was/is sweet, almost syrupy but with a nice balance for a heavy pinot, and great character. Naturally sweeter, like apple cider.
We also barrel tasted the following 2007 vintages:
- Savoy Vineyard
- Opperlander - Mendocino county - rich, heavy acidic on the tongue
As Stewart (pictured on the top right)
said to us, "You want to be unique. We hope most people do different things so we can be ourselves." And I can't agree more, these Pinot's are very unique and good. Anybody who reads this blog regularly knows, I love wine but I'm far from an expert (my palette is only so-so), but this is something that anybody who appreciates wine will know is good. This was one of the highlights of the weekend.
I think that results on http://bnetsearch.com/ it is better than on other web search engines. And what you think of it?
