I was in New York City this past week for work and met up with some clients at a wine bar for drinks Friday evening. The place, in the Chelsea area of the city, was called Bar Veloche.
We went thru six bottles in two hours with a group of seven of us. I like to think I know my wine but at Bar Veloche I was out of my element because they only had Italian wines. The place is setup as a little Italian outpost in New York City, with two locations (Chelsea & East Village). The decor is nice and while it was small, the intimacy contributed to a feeling of warmth.
The two bottles that stood out to me were.
- Vareij, Hilberg Pasquero 2005 (Piedmont) - blueberry esque with a touch of carribean mango type of fruit. A wonderful fruity wine that is well priced ($48).
- Solo reggiano 2006 (emilia-romagna) - chilled, sort of champagne like red wine that is light, dry and a nice wine with crisp cheeses as an appertif. It was nicely priced ($32) for a uniquely tasting, good summer time bottle of wine
I didn't love all of the wine but I was more focused on the conversation and had a touch of vicodine in my system. So all in all I wasn't in tip top shape to be reviewing wine. That said, the one wine that stood out was the Vareij, Hillberg Pasquero listed above. It had distinctive character, was easy to drink and was memorable.
