The restaurant we kept hearing about and recommended to us in Mendoza was Azafrán. Azafrán is spanish for the spice Saffron, and this place is all about food. Decorated in a mediterranean style, located in downtown Mendoza, it leverages local produce with an Italian tint to serve outstanding food. We ate here twice and explored a range of the menu without disappointment. While I'm sure there are dozens of great restaurants in Mendoza, and we surely visited a couple outstanding ones surrounding the city, Azafran won't disappoint even the most discerning taste.
Fresh and interesting, nothing we ordered disappointed. Our first visit included a mixed salad, a pasta and a filet mignon. Our second visit included a lomo beef cut (back, lean piece of meat) and different pasta. I had all three dishes, they were spectacular.
Wine: The restaurant has a beautiful cellar where you can pick out your wine for the meal. Both times we had regional Malbec offerings that were only available locally.
Summary: this has been one of the best restaurants we've visited, not as amazing as the high end winery restaurants (O Fournier in particular) but on par with the restaurants in Buenos Aires (such as Sucre, Bar Uriarte & Bar 6) and a can't miss spot (in my opinion) for any trip to Mendoza.
