Seghesio Family Vineyards Visit & Tasting notes
Seghesio is an old winery, dating back to 1895, that has gained notoriety with a top 10 wine on this years top hundred wine spectator list. While they have been a major vintner, known for outstanding Zinfandel, they are big enough (100k cases a year) to be driving the Sonoma wine reputation forward.
On our visit we tasted a 2006 Sangiovese that was pleasant but uneven. The next was an 06 Block Zinfandel that was delicious, with subtle fruit. The follower was another Zinfandel, the 2006 Home Ranch - a heavier fruit bomb like Zin that needed carbs to be fully appreciated. The Zin parade concluded with the 2006 Auradou, a Dry Creek version that displayed typical Zin characteristics.
The last tasting was of a 2004 San Lorenzo Petite Sirah. Made from 93 year old vines that generate less than one hundred cases, this vanilla jam concoction is wonderful.
The winery is located just off the downtown Healdsburg square, and is a great tasting stop for anybody coming thru town looking for some great Zinfandel.
