We visited the winery, Gundlach Bundschu, just outside Sonoma, CA today for a tasting and tour. GunPun.com, as they're trying to use as a funny short for their name, was founded in 1858 and has remained a family owned & operated business for the past 152 years.
I found all their wines to be delicate and smooth, its clear they choose to pick their grapes not when the quantity is maximized but when the fruit is the right fit for their approach. Their Pinot Noir was outstanding, as is their Gewürztraminer, a staple of the family estate for decades and a unique white varietal for the States. However their dry rendition is outstanding.
The picture is of their most recent vintage reserve, their most expensive wine at $80 a bottle. The rest of the bottles are between $20-$40, and the tastings are complimentary.
If you get an opportunity to visit this winery, don't pass it up, its great wine in a great location devoid of the commercial focus of many other larger wineries that dominant Napa & Sonoma counties these days.
